Leaps and Bounds

... they say that's how they grow - and it's true!  Our little Peanut is growing by leaps and bounds!  I can't believe he's 4 weeks old today... and that his one month birthday is Friday!  It doesn't seem like a month ago that I was in the delivery room huffing and puffing (and sneaking the occasional 'Nila Wafter to keep me energized) anxious to meet our little boy!

Just look at how he's changed!
Just minutes after birth...
 May 24th - 27 days old
He went from weighing 9lbs 5oz at birth, to weighing 10lbs 15oz at his last checkup (May16th)!
He went from 21 inches long, to 23 inches long.  He's such a big boy!  It's hard to believe he's only a newborn when you see how big he is :)

Here he was in his first car seat ride - 3 days old.
(We may have assumed he'd be a bit smaller... probably didn't need all that padding!)

And here he was on his 3 week birthday, heading out for a celebratory dinner on the town!

(Bill thinks he could be cast for the next ET movie with that hood up on his head) ;)
I couldn't imagine life without our little one.  I absolutely love being able to stay home with him all day and watch him as he grows and develops.

He already has great eye contact skills - and has recently started smiling and cooing when I look at him!  He's getting a lot of strength in his neck too, he loves being held up on a shoulder (like in burping position) so he can pick his head up and look around.  He enjoys bath time more now than he used to, especially the hair washing.  We do it in our bathroom and his favorite thing is to look at me through the mirror while I bend over him giving him the bath (I lay him on the counter on a towel and sponge bathe - he still has his cord stump).  He doesn't like getting dressed/undressed - I guess that's just a boy thing.  :)
He loves when momma sings to him too - I usually just make up songs, but he likes it a lot and it usually can calm him down if he's upset.  One day I even caught Papa singing to him.. the "C is for cookie" Cookie Monster song... I guess Cookie Monster was on the diaper and that's what spurred on the song :)
He likes his swing a lot right now too, awake or asleep he will sit in there for a while just content to swing and listen to the music.
He loves to suck!  In fact, he was born with a 'sucking blister' on his wrist from sucking on it so much while he was in my belly still!  If he can find his hands and fingers he's a happy camper, he still has some trouble keeping them in his mouth, but with a little assistance from mom or dad, he can suck on his fist/first finger like it's nobody's business!
We actually gave him a paci for the first time yesterday.  We don't want him to become addicted to pacis or too dependent, so we only give it to him as a last resort (after we've tried feeding, changing, swaddling, holding/cuddling, etc), but he took it like a champ and really likes it.  We also decided not to give it to him if he's freaking out (crying hard) because we want him to continue to learn how to self soothe (or for us to be the ones that sooth him at this early stage) so we only give it to him once he's calmed down and/or if he's trying really hard to suck on his fingers and just can't get it.
But he does look awfully cute with that thing in there! :)

Another recent 'first' was his first bottle!  On the 22nd I pumped for the first time, and he took his first bottle!  He took it like a champ too!  He gave me a funny look at first, but once he tasted a little drop of the milk he latched right on and ate it up!  (sorry, all I have is the cell phone photo - it was late at night and we were already in bed)

We plan on giving him at least one bottle a day, just so he's used to it.  That way if we need to go out for a date, or if I need to go somewhere alone, whoever is with him can feed him.  I don't plan on pumping a huge supply or anything, just one bottle a day.  I do about 3-4 oz and he doesn't quite finish it all, but at night he's feedings are closer together and that's when we've been doing the bottle.
Papa gave him the bottle for the first time last night.  It was so sweet to see him holding O and looking at him and talking to him while he ate. I'm excited that Bill can feed him now and have that as more bonding time for the two of them.

He's still sleeping sporatically, though he usually takes a long nap in the late morning/early afternoon, and again in the early evening.  For the most part he sleeps 1-2 hours, wakes up, eats, has a little awake time and then naps again.  At night time his bedtime routine usually starts around 9pm.  He'll sleep for 2-4 hours, wake up to eat, sleep for 2 hours, wake up to eat, and then it's usually 1 hour shifts the rest of the morning.  We usually lounge upstairs until 9 or 10 am on that routine.  The good thing is, he usually goes right back to sleep after he eats - usually.  I'm hoping we get more 2-4 hour shifts in the mix soon, the every hour thing is pretty tiring - hence staying up in bed until 10am. :)
I think I covered all the basics!  He's such a good baby.  Almost always content to just sit and look around or to be held.  He only cries if he's over-tired.. it's only a fuss or two if he's hungry or needs to be changed.

I love, love, love being a stay at home mom right now.  I'm so thankful that God blessed us with this little boy and that He's providing me the opportunity to stay home with him and see him grow and change every day!

His favorite things to do:  Wave his hands all around, smile in his sleep and even when he's awake, hold mommy's fingers, suck on his hands, sleep, eat, snuggle.

Mommy's favorite things: his little baby toes, his little fingers, his deep, dark blue eyes, and all the cute faces he makes - especially the face he makes when he stretches... haven't been able to capture that one on camera yet.

In a Word: Speechless

I'm overwhelmed with joy
Filled to the brim with happiness
Consumed by a love that runs deep down inside

I'm brought to tears every time
I think of how much I love
Our little boy

I can't even imagine how much
More
God loves me
him
us
you

When I look in his deep blue eyes
When I hear the soft sounds of his breathing
When I smell the sweetness of his skin
When I feel the firm grip of his soft fingers around mine
When I taste the saltiness of his tears as I kiss them away

I can't help but be

Speechless

Plan O

Anyone who knows me at all knows that I am a planner.  I like to have things, for the most part, laid out in advance.  I like to know things are ready to go, taken care of.  So who would be surprised to know that for the birth of our little one, I wanted to have a plan.  When April 17th came around I wanted to be prepared.
We did everything we could to get ready: painted the nursery, stocked it with all the essentials, took my vitamins, picked out a name, took childbirth class, read up on the Bradley Method, read about vaccines, and wrote a birth plan.

Plan A was to go all natural in childbirth.  Not to prove a point.  Not to just be able to say I did it.  But because I wanted to experience childbirth in it's entirety.  I also did not want to put any chemical/medical stimulus into my body that would affect the sensations that come along with labor and birth.  We also decided right away that we didn't want the baby to receive any vaccines or unnecessary medical treatment at birth.  We opted to skip the Vitamin K shot (used to clot baby's blood before his body starts making Vit. K on it's own), skip the Hepatitis B vaccine and also to forgo the erethromycin ointment put on baby's eyes (used to stop any bacteria (mainly from STD's) from entering baby's eyes during passage through birth canal).  We also had no desire to had him circumcised in the hospital, we wanted a specialist (urologist) to do it, rather than just a pediatrician.  That was all listed in the birth plan and we printed it, and put it with the hospital bag.

Then I contacted the urologist who comes highly recommended from my friends and from many people in the community as well, including our pediatrician.  He told me he could come to the hospital and do it right there!  I was pretty excited, this meant that my insurance would still cover the cost, and we wouldn't need to make an appointment more than a month after his birth (this guy is high demand!).  It also made us reconsider our decision on the Vitamin K shot.  Baby's body starts making its own vitamin K after a few days, that supplemented with breast milk, really helps baby's blood to clot naturally.  However, now that we were doing the circumcision in the hospital, his body wouldn't have the time to do this, so we decided to go ahead with the Vitamin K shot, for the safety of our little one.  So I revised the birth plan, printed it and put it with the hospital bag.

As April 17 drew nearer and I still had no signs of going into labor, something in me began getting anxious.  I was so ready to meet our little one!  At our OB appointment the day after my due date, I was measuring at 4cm and was 80% effaced - the doctor said I was ready any day now!  How exciting!  I knew due dates were just an estimate, so I wasn't too worried that I was over by a day.  The new plan: walk, walk, walk, walk!  And that's just what I did.  I literally walked every. single. day.  With hubby, with friends, inside, outside, walking, walking, walking.  Thursday I went in to recheck my blood pressure at the OB.  While I was there I asked if she could take a peak and see if there was any progress.  She said I was now 5cm!  That's awesome, except it took me three days to get there.  We decided to have her help things along a little bit by the most natural means of induction possible.  We knew that come next Monday we'd be talking about induction via Pitocin and I wanted to avoid that at all costs.  So the doc. 'swept my membranes', which essentially allows my water to break a lot easier.  She said she would be surprised if she saw me at my appointment on Monday, she even called the doctor on call that night and told them I should be coming in! After the appointment we... you guessed it, went walking!  Then we went on our 'last date night' for dinner, expecting to be going into the hospital that night or the following day.  I walked 15 miles that week, from Monday to Friday, and still, no. signs. of. labor.  Contractions would come and go, but they were never consistent.  And my water still hadn't broke.

Saturday morning rolled around and that's when I started to lose myself a little.  (You can read about it here)  I know that due dates are an estimate, but this was getting a little ridiculous.  My mom would be getting in town today!  She booked her flight a week late just so she'd be able to spend time with us at home, with her grandson.  And here I am. Still. Pregnant.  This was not part of the my plan.  But, as God revealed to us later, it was part of His plan.  Saturday was the pivotal day for me.  It was the day I let it go and gave it to God.  It wasn't easy, and I wasn't totally changed right away, but it was God working in me, letting me know that Plan A, or Plan B, don't always pan out.

Sunday came and went and I was still pregnant, 7 days past my due date.  I was okay with it though, we figured that it was happening this way so we could go to church as a family on Easter.  We even got to cook a nice Easter dinner with mom and spend some time relaxing together.  It was a great Sunday.

Monday morning came and fear started to creep in, just a tiny bit.  I knew that today was the day we'd have to talk about medically inducing with the doctor.  I pushed the fear aside and spent some quality time with Mom, just her and me, while Bill was at work.  We met up in the afternoon for the appointment and sure enough, induction was laid on the table.  After the ultrasound, and seeing that he was estimated to be 8lbs 15oz, we had to start talking induction.  So I asked the doctor what my options were.  I had heard about a gel they can use to start things going, a pill, and some other things as well - I was trying to avoid getting Pitocin because of the side affects that come along with it.  She told us that, unfortunately, all the other options for inducing would only get me to where I already was - 5cm and 80% effaced.  Pitocin was the only option.  We had to pick a date to go in for the induction.  She suggested tomorrow (Tuesday).  I asked her if we could call and set it up after having some time to think about it.  She (very hesitantly) said, "Only because I trust you to call us!".  The latest date we could choose was Friday.  And now a new choice lay before us.  Mom left town on Saturday to go back to AZ.  But if there was still a chance that he could come naturally, I didn't want to jump the gun and schedule it too early.  So after talking it over with Bill and praying about it, we chose Thursday.  I called that afternoon and made the appointment.  We all 'knew' and were hoping and praying that he would come naturally before then though.

Tuesday came and still no labor signs.  Bill's boss called and told him he had to take vacation for this week because they couldn't be in 'limbo' anymore about trying to cover his route.  We weren't happy about it but we took the opportunity to spend some quality time with my grandparents, who had come into town Monday to surprise my mom.  We spent the whole day together, hanging out, shopping (they sure do spoil this baby!), and just enjoying each others' company.

Wednesday morning rolled around and I got up to use the bathroom for the third time that night (nothing unusual), but when I stood up to get back into bed, something just kept running down my leg.  I knew I had a weak bladder these days, but it wasn't that weak!  My water broke!  Sure enough, after cleaning up and finding it didn't do any good because it just kept coming, I woke up Bill with those words I had been so longing to say, "Honey, my water broke!"  It was 5:25am and I called the doctor and left her a message with my stats and told her my water broke, and she called back and told me to come in.  So after waking up mom with those same three words, and calling Tammy to tell her the same news, we started getting things around and headed to the hospital.

When we arrived I was asked to 'gown up' and the triage nurse checked to be sure it was in fact amniotic fluid, and it was.  We were moved into a labor and delivery room and the admitting process began.  Since my water was broken, they didn't check me when I arrived to see how dilated/effaced I was.  Once the water breaks, bacteria can enter and any extra checks down there could introduce bacteria.  So we set about to - you guessed it - walk.  We walked circles, figure 8's, mini-circles, down the dead-ends and back again.  Heading back to the room every 30 minutes so baby and I could be monitored.  My contractions were coming pretty regularly now.  About 4-5 minutes apart, strong enough that I could feel them, but they weren't taking my breath away or stopping me from walking.  Around 10am the contractions got closer together, 3-4 minutes apart and I was having to stop and breathe through them as we walked the L&D hallways.  When we went back for the 11:00 monitoring and the contractions stayed 3-4 minutes apart, the nurse offered to check my progress.  I was 7cm now!  My cervix was pretty thinned out, except for part of the top of it, which was still pretty thick.  We were told to 'just keep walking'.  So we headed back down the hallway.

When we came back at noon to be monitored I knew that I couldn't walk the halls anymore.  My contractions were now very, strong, taking my breath away and they were only 2 minutes apart.  The doctor came in to check on things and I was 8cm, but the top of my cervix was still thick.  He said he knew I didn't want Pitocin, but that when the water breaks there are only about 12hrs, 18 at the most, to get the baby out because of the risk of infection.  He said because I was making progress still we could wait on Pitocin.  I was told not to push, no matter how strong the urge and to keep powering through the contractions.  Hard labor had set in and I was not happy with those instructions.  These contractions were downright painful and I felt the urge to push but I couldn't!  I stood through as may as I could, hanging on for dear life to Bill & Tammy (who were amazing at hanging in there with me, gosh, I couldn't have done it without them!), rocking back and forth and breathing as deeply as I could.

Around 5pm I couldn't stand anymore, literally.  My legs were just too weak, so I tried laying on my side.  That worked for a while, but my hips quickly got sore and I had to flip over.  I rode out the contractions for the next couple hours semi-propped up with Bill & Tammy on either side of me holding my legs in a bent position because laying flat was just not an option.  The shakes had set in at this point and I was beginning to hyperventilate.  My hands and face were all tingly from not breathing deeply enough, even though I could have sworn I was breathing deep!  My contractions were now a minute or less apart and I had very little time to rest between them.  They were peaking very strongly and I even asked Bill & Tammy for meds.  It was bad.  I asked them three times, but they both knew that it was the contractions talking and they rationalized me out of getting the epidural.  Throughout this time I was hooked up to monitors and they continued taking my vitals.  I tried to ignore it, but each time they took my temperature it was rising.... a sign of possible infection.

Around 7:30 the doctor came back to check on me and take my vitals again.  My temp was up to 101* under my arm (actually 102*) and I was still only 8cm.  I was having constant contractions at this point, so I didn't catch all of what he said, but I did hear, "She has an infection... which means the baby has the infection... I know it's not in your plan... c-section... this is serious... half-hour... talk about it... let me know."

I didn't want to talk about it.  It wasn't the pain that made me decide right away to go ahead with the c-section, it was peace.  I had this amazing, overwhelming sense of peace that could only come from God that this was His plan.  I told Tammy & Bill to run out and get him and tell him to start things going right away.

The nurse hooked me up to antibiotics to fight off the Chorioamnionitis (infection) and fluids to get me ready for surgery.  Bill got out of his clothes and into scrubs and Tammy stood vigilant by my side holding my legs for me as I plowed through the constant contractions.  They wheeled me down the hall and into the OR.  And made me move over to the surgical table right through my contractions - I may have pleaded with them to wait for the contraction to be over, but they said there wasn't time.  I sat hunched over the nurse while the spinal was put in and that was the. worst. pain. ever.  Not the spinal going in.  But having to sit there, hunched over as far as I could with a huge belly in my lap hitting contractions less than a minute apart that I could barely breathe through.  Once the spinal was in the pain relief started coming almost immediately.  They laid me down and started hooking me up to be monitored and it was the. best. feeling. ever.  An wave of peace, calmness and relaxation rushed over me and I was finally able to be in the moment.

They let Bill come in at this point and he sat right by me holding my hand while they prepped me for the surgery.  I was so happy, completely filled with joy.  Because I could look at my husband now and see the joyful anticipation in his eyes.  Because in just a few minutes we would be able to see our baby boy.  After about 10 minutes our little boy was being lifted out of me and into the hands of the nurses who took him to be cleaned up right next to me.
Bill got to cut the cord and he acted as photographer while the baby got cleaned and measured.  I was a little disappointed that I couldn't hold or touch him right away, but I was so happy that Bill got to be so involved and up close with him, and that he got to hold him first.

He brought him over to me and I got to kiss his sweet face and tell him hello while they finished stapling me back together.

In a few more minutes we were in the OR recovery and I got to hold my sweet baby boy for some much needed skin to skin time.  We sat there for almost an hour enjoying each others' touch and feeling the rhythm of our heartbeats.  Just before being wheeled back into the room, I nursed him and he latched on perfectly the first time!

We got back into the room and Tammy, Mom, Grandpa & Helen were all waiting anxiously to see the little one.

We celebrated him with smiles and hugs and kisses all around and there was this understanding in the room... this God-peace, God-created, understanding that, even though things didn't go according to Plan A... or B... or C or D... that this was God's plan, Plan O - to bring baby Owen safely into this world - and that was all that mattered.

A Snake

Warning: This post is: Real and True.  No comic relief in here.  Lots of Spiritual realm stuff.  Deep.  Exposed.

Read at your own Risk.

We saw this snake on Saturday afternoon while we were walking the Greenway.  He was perched in this little bush letting his lunch digest and Bill spotted him.  He was right at eye-level.

An interesting wildlife spotting considering the events that occurred earlier that morning.  I woke up early (5am-ish) wide awake with my brain on overdrive.  My mind wouldn't stop reeling, I couldn't switch it off.  All I kept thinking was, "What's wrong with me?  Why is my body not doing what it is supposed to?  what have I done, or not done, that I should be doing to start labor?"  You see, just two days ago at our doctor appointment, I was dilated to 4cm and my cervix was plenty thin for labor to be starting.  The doctor even called into the doctor on call for the weekend to let them know I'd probably be coming in, that's how confident she was that we'd have this baby by Saturday at the latest.

But it was Saturday morning and I had NO signs of active labor starting.  It was Saturday morning and my mom was flying into town that night.  We were running out of time.  Why wasn't my body working?  What is wrong with me?  There it is.  Can you hear it?  The snake.  Satan.  Creeping in again.  I knew it was him because thoughts like this would NOT come from God.  I am fearfully and wonderfully made in His likeness.  My body is perfectly capable of labor.  Nothing is wrong with me.  I haven't done anything wrong.  But Satan was trying again, to creep in.  And I despised him for it.  It made me so. Mad.

I rolled over into my hubby's arms and asked if he was awake enough for me to tell him something.  Just thinking about telling him made me start to cry, tears of anger and frustration.  He realized what was happening and just held me while I got it all out, and when the time was right, asked what was going on.  I told him everything - the thoughts that had been running through my head and how Satan was trying to attack again.  I told him I hated that he was trying it again, just like he tried at the beginning, right before we conceived, and now he was creeping in again, before the birth.  He reassured me and comforted me and prayed with me.  And we lay there for a few hours, just relaxing, coming to terms with things, fighting off Satan with our prayers and our strength from God.

Hubby even took the day off work, to be with me, and to prove to Satan that he wasn't going to let anything more happen to me.  We had an incredible day together, enjoyed our morning sleeping in and decided to go for a walk on the Greenway to get some exercise in on a beautiful sunny day.

And that's when we saw it.

The snake.

And deep down inside I felt strong.  I felt victorious.
That snake didn't scare me one bit.  So I took it's picture, standing feet away from him as he stared at me.

And on the way back by later, after laughing and enjoying our time on the trail, the snake was gone.  Nowhere to be seen.

No evidence that he had ever even been there.

Take that Satan.
We won.
Again.

The Proof is in the...

Pudding photo.

Yup.  There it is.  Proof that I am still pregnant.  Due date?  Riiiight.  April 17th has come and gone, but you know what, I'm coming to terms with it.  I'm officially 41 weeks pregnant.  I still feel great, baby is still doing fine, so no worries.

Just goes to show ya God is the one that decides birthdays, not doctors.  : )

Finally!

We have finally finished the room!  Well... who am I kidding?  It will never really be finished - there's always stuff that I will want to do to change and update it as he grows... but for now - VIOLA - it's DONE! :)
This was taken from the door of the room...
And that swirly stuff above the crib?  No, that's not some awesome artwork I hand painted on the wall... that's the letters that spell out his name, which I 'liquefied' in Photoshop... can't be giving away the secret before he comes into the world now, can I?  ;)
This one is taken from the window in the corner...
Totally in love with that floor lamp - not only is it a nice, glowy light for night time feeding and changing, but it turns on by a step-on switch on the floor!  AND it was only $20 at Ikea!
This one is taken from the closet door, by the lamp.
.... and that's that!  It's all ready for this little boy to enjoy!

Now if only we could convince him how cool his new room is maybe he would come out into this world...  :)

The View from Here

Decided to try some more walking yesterday to coax this little boy out.  Did about a mile the first time, with a friend of mine.  Then on the way home I had a couple contractions so I thought, "Heck, I'm gonna keep going!"  So I asked hubby (since he was now home from work) if he wanted to head out.  So we went back.  The first loop we did was about a mile, and this was the view from the 1/2 way point.  B. E. A. Utiful!

And this was the view more than once during our (3mile) walk that afternoon... it's springtime in Charlotte and these little guys are dangling from their little silk lines everywhere.  This one thought it'd be fun to hitch a ride on my belly.
And the lesson I learned? - next time bring my real camera because the one on my cellphone... well, it kind of sucks.

And no, baby is STILL not out.  Going back today for more walking... with my real camera this time.  :)

After the Attack

It's been about 9 months since the attack.  The horrible, expected, depressing, hard-to-get-through, attack.

While I was cleaning today I decided to thumb through my journal from Ghana, landing on the last page to see where I left off, I read about the attack.  It made me mad.  It made me tear up just a little bit.  But then I thought to myself; wait a minute.  Stop.  Look at yourself.  And I let those tears come.  But those tears didn't come in pain or sadness, they ran down a face that was smiling because we WON.  We were brutally attacked, but we survived and we were victorious over Satan and his stupid, evil, sneaky ways.

The moment I stepped foot back on American soil after living on the mountain-top in Ghana, and saw my husband's beautiful face (smiling from ear to ear) at the airport, Satan started to wriggle in.  I was SO excited to see him after being away for 10 days.  But Satan knew that if he timed things just right, he could wriggle his way in between us and start attacking our marriage.  And it worked.  For a couple of days, it worked.  I withdrew from my husband, not entirely, but enough to give Satan room to get comfortable sitting in between us.  I was scared, Satan used fear to get at me.  I was scared that if I let myself get too close to my husband, then I would feel 'farther away' from Ghana and the relationships I had built there.  Satan was telling me I couldn't have both.  I couldn't experience the amazing God-Love of the relationships I built in Ghana and have an amazing marriage to my husband.  I knew it was Satan, but I didn't know what to do about it.

So after some praying (LOTS of praying), some guidance from our amazing friends, the Garrets, and a lot of 'faking-it-to-make-it-even-though-I-didn't-feel-it' - it started to work.  I drew nearer to my husband, relying on him for strength and love and knowing that those stupid lies Satan told me were just that - STUPID.  My husband and I grew so much stronger in our marriage through the attack.  We became much more communicative (which is saying a lot, because we communicated pretty well already), we became more in-tune to each others' spiritual realm and well... let's just say we made sure there wasn't any room for Satan to get between us anymore... literally.  :)

And now it's 9 months later and we anxiously await the arrival of our little boy.

Take that Satan.  He thought he could get between us, but we were victorious!  Thanks to God being on our side, and our amazing friends the Garretts, we ARE the victors.  Satan lost at his attempt to crumble our marriage - we are stronger now than we ever were in our relationship AND we have a precious baby boy that we get to raise up in the light and love of God.  We've got a life that we will raise up to know about Satan and his sneaky ways, and how to defeat him.  We were victorious over Satan, we ARE victorious over Satan, and our little boy will be to - whose name means, "Young Warrior Anointed by God."  There isn't a better name in the world for this little one, and we're sure of it.  For out of those circumstances, came an amazing blessing from God that we will forever remember.  Every time we say his name, or look at his sweet face, we will remember that through everything, God is with us and we are victorious over anything Satan tries to throw at us.
